Some Things God Never Promised

img_1065.png

I’m going to get straight to the point with this blog post.

There are Christians that are holding out for promises that God never made. And you might be one of them… and so might I!

This fact makes me sad. Because people are holding on so tightly to these false promises that they can’t take hold of the good things that God has for them right now. And they can never really find true freedom.

The one I see most often, is people believing that God has promised them a husband or a wife. This simply is not true.

God also never promised us health, financial gain, or a happy life. (In fact, we are told that suffering will come.) He never promised us popularity or success in worldly terms. All these are good things. Things we wouldn’t be wrong to call blessings, but none of them are things God has promised us.

And while it wouldn’t necessarily be wrong to work for those things, we may never be blessed in those ways. We can waste entire lifetimes waiting for something that may never happen, or we can live right now, in true freedom, knowing how undeservedly blessed we are.

How selfish is it to live our life holding onto the belief that God will bless us in the exact way that we want him too?

Because he does bless us. So much more than we deserve, in much greater ways than those. He may not bless us in the same way that he blesses our best friend or our siblings.

And that is okay. Even if we never experience romantic love. Even if we do not find healing in the way we want, or gain the success we hope for., he has given us so much more than any of that when Jesus died on the cross.

The only way we can ever know true freedom is when we can stand up and say “The cross was enough.”

These are not just empty words.

Even when our world comes crashing down, it is possible to say that Jesus is enough

Even if we never get healed, Jesus is enough.

Even when we feel the pain of rejection, Jesus is enough.

He really is.

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we[c] also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. (Romans 5: 1-5)

Lord I am sorry for the times when I haven’t acted as if you are enough. Where I have held on too tightly to promises you never made. Right now I choose to hand my hopes and dreams over to you, even if they never become a reality: You are enough. Check my heart and bring to light anything I hadn’t realised I was holding on to. Amen

    • Thanks, I know that if Jesus was a genie in a bottle, he would have given me a lot of things that I should never have. Only he knows what I truly need.

  1. I agree, but let us not forget the Holy Spirit who comforts us and touches us in small yet huge ways everyday. Jesus gave us the Holy Spirit to be with us. The Cross is enough because of Pentecost.

  2. This post reminds me of a portion of a song that goes something like this, “The cross was enough, The cross was enough, The cross was enough for me.” Everything Jesus did on the cross was for freedom and to set me free. I love that!
